THE HISTORY OF LES VOILES DE SAINT-TROPEZ
The history of Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez began on September 29, 1981, with a simple challenge. The sailboat Pride challenged a 12-meter Ikra on a course from the village of Saint-Tropez to Pampelonne beach, via the Nioulargo. The following year, the 12-meter Ikra took its revenge, accompanied by other boats who also wanted to take part in the new challenge. Since then, the world’s most extraordinary sailing boats – traditional boats in week 1 and modern maxi yachts in week 2 – have been meeting in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez to challenge each other in a competitive yet convivial atmosphere.
THE PROGRAM FOR LES VOILES DE SAINT-TROPEZ
The course of the Voiles de Saint-Tropez may vary from day to day, depending on weather conditions. Generally speaking, the course area for Traditional yachts is between the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and off Cannes. For sailboats, the zone is between La Moutte and the Salins off Pampelonne, and as far as Cavalaire if conditions are very favorable.
You too can experience the race like a real skipper, with ease. The staff at Hotel Lou Pinet will be able to provide you with information on the various contacts of service providers offering you the chance to embark on a boat and follow the race at close quarters. To avoid having to travel by car, the hotel also offers a valet cab service, which will take you to the event and drop you back off at the hotel at the end of the day. The hotel can also recommend a list of restaurants in town, so that you can relax and enjoy this extraordinary day in the company of top sportsmen and women.
In addition to the races, Saint-Tropez hosts a wide range of events and parties open to the public every day. As the sun slowly begins to set, enjoy live music and DJ sets that invite you to dance the night away.
THE 2024 EDITION OF LES VOILES DE SAINT-TROPEZ : NEW FEATURES AND NEW DATES
Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez returns with an exceptional edition, from September 28 to October 6, 2024, to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Exciting new features await over 250 of the world’s most magnificent Maxis, Modern and Classic yachts.
A major new feature of this year’s event is the inauguration of the regattas by the superyacht fleet on the first Sunday, October 1. This configuration will allow the public, particularly on the opening weekend, to watch the Maxis train and witness spectacular regattas between the most incredible racing monohulls, measuring over 18.28 meters and led by renowned international crews. Starts and finishes will take place just outside the village of Saint-Tropez. This extraordinary gathering of the finest models of naval architecture, representing over a century of history, has been highly requested for several editions.
From Sunday, September 29, the Voiliers de Tradition will join Saint-Tropez to take part in the famous “Coupe d’Automne du Yacht Club de France”. On Monday, September 30, the Modern fleet will begin its series of races with a flexible programme that allows course types and durations to vary according to weather conditions. This is thanks to an “agile” race committee system that uses autonomous geo-positionable electric buoys whose information is transmitted to competitors electronically. The event reaches its climax on Tuesday with the arrival of the Traditional yachts, bringing all the fleets together on the same stretch of water.
A day of combined challenges and activities on and off the water that promises a rich and exciting experience for participants and spectators alike.
